Groen Kwartier
Our meeting will take place at Hotel August, the former Augustinian convent with its own chapel. It is located in the Haringrode district of Antwerp, on the border with Zurenborg and Berchem, in the area known as ‘t Groen Kwartier.
The name ‘t Groen Kwartier refers to the former Military Hospital of Antwerp on the Marialei, where soldiers were once treated, and the adjacent arsenal on Lange Leemstraat. These facilities replaced Fortje 4, a small fort from 1851 that was demolished in 1885. The name combines “Military Hospital Quarter” with the green character the area has acquired through redevelopment by the City of Antwerp.
Starting in 2010, the site was transformed into ‘t Groen Kwartier, a new residential quarter.
Today, ‘t Groen Kwartier consists of apartment blocks, new-build houses, renovated townhouses (formerly officer residences of the Military Hospital), the former Augustinian convent with its chapel, renovated loft buildings (previously hospital buildings), and several notable establishments, The Jane, a 2-star Michelin restaurant housed in the former central chapel, de Stookplaats, a creative agency, De Broodnatie, a bakery, Delhaize Proxy, and other amenities.
The quarter also borders the vibrant PAKT Antwerp complex.
