From 11 to 13 November 2025, two members of the SFPE Benelux Board of Directors attended the SFPE Europe LiION Symposium in Lisbon. The event brought together fire safety experts, researchers, engineers, and practitioners to examine developments and challenges associated with lithium-ion battery technologies.

As battery use expands across consumer products, mobility, industry, and building energy storage, international knowledge exchange is increasingly important. The symposium offered a focused setting for sharing technical insight and strengthening cooperation across Europe.

International knowledge exchange helps the fire safety community respond to the rapid development of lithium-ion battery technologies.

Three days of lithium-ion battery fire safety expertise

The programme combined technical depth with discussion and professional networking. Over the course of the symposium, participants took part in:

• 28 technical presentations covering current knowledge and developments in battery fire safety.
• Multiple panel discussions with international specialists from across the fire safety field.
• Extensive networking opportunities with colleagues from Europe and beyond.

Bringing European knowledge back to the Benelux

The SFPE Benelux representatives returned with new insights, professional connections, and knowledge that can support continued innovation within the regional fire safety community. Participation in European events helps the chapter connect international developments with the practical questions facing engineers and organisations across Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

This exchange supports SFPE Benelux in its mission to promote professional development, technical knowledge sharing, and collaboration on emerging fire safety challenges.
